More money the old fashioned way
Find a need and fill it is the marketing mantra. Coupled with that is the notion of charging the needy for scratching their itch. That's not just capitalism, that's human nature.

Some high profile individuals get a big paycheck just for their raw output, but others get a share of the proceeds. For Mr. Softee, thousands of developers became multimillionaires from the stock options and a handful became billionaires. At google, the owners are billionaires, but they aren't giving away any software AFAIK. They sell their system software along with hardware to quite a few folk. Plus they are getting beaucoup bucks in advertising revenues from selling the right hand side of their pages to people who are eager to pay for the "impressions" they get.

If google thinks they can build traffic with their own browser, more power to them! But it is hardly a victory for the OSS smurfs.
