Interesting take on a server company.
For the most part, Sun has made their money by selling enterprise servers (mainframes like the E10K and E15K, workgroup/thin client such as E4x00, E2x0) and workstations (Ultra60, Ultra80, Sparc 2....) their focus has been on engineering and back end primarily. They purchased some desktop applications (an office suite called StarOffice a few years back) but have been primarily backend systems. They have provided thin client hardware and software and portable runtime stuff based upon years of prior work (p-code, VM work, OOP, etc.).

They (Sun) were one of the parties that initiated the cases in both the US and Europe (backed by court documents in both cases) and until the cash settlement a little while back and some lip service, have been rivals with Microsoft in the server market (Solaris v. Windows).

It is highly unlikely that MS Office will ever run on Solaris, just as it will probubly never run on BSD, Linux, AIX, or any other Unix based system. It is also highly unlikely that Microsoft will go out of their way to make their file formats very portable (Star/Openoffice doesn't do a wonderful job of importing the formatting data).
