- By a strange quirk of fate (Karma?) Sun needs MS.
-
The single biggest problem Solaris is facing is the lack of applications, hence the deep desire to get developers on board. With their new relationship with Microsoft they need (MUST) convince MS to port applications to Solaris. (That $Billion$ plus settlement could be worked out.
)
This has a real up side for Microsoft too. Consider that MS has supported Office on the Mac and OSX without harming their OS sales a bit. Providing Office on a targeted, free, open source OS opens many doors for them. This OS license is not at all like the GPL and has the sorts of IP controls MS wants.
MS is having difficulty (as are most) in building a workable price point and delivery solution in parts of the world, that's why they have the limited (cheaper) version of Windows in test markets. Being able to go to the customers/governments that are wanting to go to an open source OS and offering MS Office could be a huge hit for both companies. And from an MS view point, Star/OpenOffice would take a real hit. Obviously they would have to work that out with Sun but I am certain they could find a middle ground.
Read the other article on how MS is expanding the function/introperability of Office and it's plain to me they see Office as the front end to serious enterprise computing. Sun is arugably the biggest fish in the enterprise arena and together they could re-write the landscape, again.
I have thought privately there was a compelling reason, unknown to us, for MS and Sun to bury the hatchet. The two respective head honcho's have been going at each other tooth and nail for decades and that doesn't just end. There was no fan fare from Sun when they won the settlement when I expected dancing in the street by all the top execs. and some special words from you know who. Not a bit of it.
My crystal ball says to keep a close eye on how this partnership develops... - Posted by: No_Ax_to_Grind Posted on: 01/24/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
