Certainly a good move for Solaris..
From a technical perspective, this will make it easier to integrate Linux drivers into Solaris I imagine.

However there are currently the following Open Source kernels (and these are just the biggies):

The reason to use them is in brackets:
Linux (features)
FreeBSD (speed amongst BSDs)
NetBSD (portability)
OpenBSD (security)
GnuMach/GnuHurd* (future superparallel)

*hurd isn't a kernel as such.

The rest of a GNU/Linux distribution with everything like KDE and so on sit above the kernel. You can selectively choose or dynamically swap between GNOME or KDE desktop for example.

In essence, all the above are competing for one small part of a free OS space.
Solaris as such is basically just another kernel competing for the same space.
{I know it consists of a lot of other programs that are typically duplicated in a regular Linux distro}.

I wonder what Solaris' major feature is compared with the above list.
By far and away Linux is the most successful in the list above, and I can't see an open source Solaris replacing Linux.

Basically I think we should welcome Solaris to the open source world, and I know some people will want Solaris and solaris only, but to me and many others, it doesn't much matter. If I liked it that much, I wouldn't have given away my Sun workstation, and I would have gotten a free X86 copy.
