- Yet another 'open source' OS. Open source is not magic. The GPL is. Only the GPL assures that free software will stay free. That is the magic of the GPL. That is why Linux is attracting a huge developer community. Open source BSD has been around since the advent of Unix (almost). But it has gone largely nowhere. Its just a quiet backwater in terms of development. It makes for a great and secure web server and thats about it. Some like it as a desktop, but it is a true techie tool in a sense that Linux isn't. Solaris is doomed to the same fate. They will attract a following, no question about it. And it is probably a good thing (the open sourcing of Solaris). But it is not a silver bullet for Sun. Not in any way.
