A couple of points...
1) Before there was Linux (1991) there was BSD. There were and are many flavors of BSD available. Currently, the most visible distribs are: FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Sun started out using BSD (SunOS 4.x was BSD). BSD has been around since before the Internet (1984 or so) and has one of the oldest TCP/IP stacks, gratis BBN.

2) Linux is the kernel, not the OS. If you used a Solaris kernel with a GNU system (replacing the Linux kernel, for example), you would have a GNUish Solaris, not a Linux using a Solaris kernel.

3) Way back before you could get MSDOS or even QDOS (pre MS purchase), you could get MS Xenix. Xenix was Microsofts first OS and it was a Unix based OS! It even found it's way into the SVR4 tree in parts. Why do you think that there is Unix in Windows XP/200x (for exaqmple, the BSD network stack)?
