And I'm sure they could care less if a small handful of hobbyists or students play around with the code. However I'm not sure that doesn't mean you won't be in violation. I agree with what you say about the GPL, but does the CDDL read the same way? Or does it say you cannot mix in GPL code at any time, whether it is released or simply just used?

I mean if you could mix and match for simple use, you could simply get around the licence restrictions by segregating GPL and CDDL code and using a source code based distribution like Gentoo to download separately, but compile together.
