You've got it backwards
"it is more of a political movement than a credible, sustainable, economic competitor"

The real question is whether proprietary software can find a nitch to survive in an open source world. OSS is economically more efficient than any proprietary software model. In economics, like nature, the more efficient predators will survive while the less efficient will either die off or specialize. I believe proprietary software can co-exist with OSS, but the new equilibrium is shifting to the OSS side of the equation.

Many companies all paying for software that does the exact same thing is economic insanity. Wasteful, inefficient and dying. I can watch OSS make further inroads into proprietary software in my own server logs. It's not diminishing, it's gaining marketshare month over month.

But I encourage you to hold tight to your proprietary fantasy. Everyone should have a dream, even if there's no data to support it.
