If free software ends up costing more than proprietary software, it will never succeed in the marketplace. Its that simple. So I would suspect that those companies basing their business models on free software will find ways to make sure that they can underprice the competition. Part of that will involve upgrading free software to the point that it is able to compete with proprietary software in terms of ease of administration and configuration. Another part will involve making sure the service pricing is competitive with the pricing of prorietary vendors. The important point is that competition has arrived, and it has arrived on the open, inexpensive hardware platform initially introduced by IBM years ago. Commodity software on a commodity platform. Will that end up costing more in the end than proprietary software on a commodity platform? Or proprietary software on a proprietary platform? I don't think so.
