I don't seem to be grasping you point here.
I buy Closed source software they go out of business I'm hosed.
I buy open source software they go out of business I still have the source. Not hosed.
Which model costs more depends on how secure you want to feel in your systems. The more secure you want to feel the more it'll cost you.
Take Linux for example. 5 years from now you can keep running it. You have the source code. You can pay for service on it as long as you wish to pay. If you version of Linux ends up 20 years old you can pay. It'll cost you though. But you have the code to do so.
