I think you are missing the point.
Nobody say's one HAS to pay..only that here is an option for
service and support, and naturally it comes at a price.

Still there will be the low cost and yes even free options, and as
the software/OS continues to develop then the need for support
will lessen. Like it did for Windows at least in theory.

However I think the main point is that people/buisness and
governments do not want to tie themselves to MS's wagon, or
more importantly want to get free of MS and her lincesing
issues.

Say I choose RH and other Open Source softwaresolutions I am
not nearly as tied to RH and Open Source as I would or have
been to MS, and the pain of going with someone else like
another Linux distro should in theory be a lot less intense.

It's all about the freedom baby.
