... of opposition to Microsoft. Particularly in Commentaries, ZDNet staffers get stars in their eyes every time they contemplate an open source success. Yes, ZDNet is zealously in favor of a company, but it's not Microsoft. It's IBM.

The only sensible part is, there is no browser market. Mozilla/Firefox have, the last I heard, produced a reduction in IE share within any reasonable margin of error. In other words, not at all.

Well, 1% per month since November of last year, projected, leads to parity in another 30 months or so.

You know samples. The sample result can differ from the actual by a certain amount.
All counts of browsers in use are going to be from samples. If the exact same percentage used IE in both the earlier and the later sample, a variation of only one point between the two samples would be considered a success.
There is no significance whatever to a one point difference.
By the way, there is, so far as I know, no proof of the accuracy of these sample counts. For all we "really" know, IE usage may have dropped by 10 points without being picked up by the sample. Sometimes we have to use questionable numbers as the closest thing to a "fact" we have.

Main point, it doesn't make much sense for Google to venture into the browser market, but the unpersuaded reader (presumably your target) might not have the patience to stick it through to the bottom line.

Google may do well to get into the browser market, only because IE pushes Microsoft's search, so they may find the absence of Microsoft's ads for their own products worth some bother. Maxon (MyIE2) and Avant show how that could be done fairly easily.
What I was objecting to was the idea that Google should waste time and money on elaborate non-search, non-browser (as internet site displayer) functionality that interests Microsoft.
