What about Yahoo
Given its suite of web-base communication and organization tools and significant experience as search engine, Yahoo is actually in a much better position to merge the desktop and the Internet.

For example, its very reasonable priced premium email service already supports POP3 support and address and calendar synching, enabling it to work pretty seamlessly with any email client as well as its own very nice web UI. And its IM also works well on the web or using a PC-based client. All Yahoo needs to do is create a WebDAV interface to it's Briefcase facility, the service would act as a network drive to any Windows, MacOS, or Linux machine.
