Re: OSS Continues To Drive Money Out of Markets
IBM and BEA are very big, smart companies so I assume they know a little more about the "dangerous game" than you or I. And they both are asking for Sun to open source java. I doubt it's to lose money.

There are already open source options that both companies are competing against, and last I checked, neither company is giving up in R&D.

The way I see it, someday the open source versions will over take the proprietary. The proprietary companies will eventually stop all internal R&D in such field and instead pool their funding into the open source project(s). In doing so, they will spend much less in R&D, have access to a much richer resource, and can concentrate on providing services, products, and other ventures surrounding the resource.

Finally, they can reroute the saved money to other ventures that interest them.

... is an animal that has a mind of its own that may turn around and bite you, because at some point, you no longer serve its interests.

Welcome to the real world, that is business. That can apply to nearly anything. You think IBM or BEA are any different?
