OSS Continues To Drive Money Out of Markets
It should be interesting to see how companies with proprietary products fare with the growing popularity of free Open Source Java server software. It seems like Open Source Java may do to proprietary Java what Linux has done to Unix. Where will the incentive be for IBM and BEA to continue investing in Java R&D on the scale they have done in the past? If these companies are going to wind up making less money from Java, why should they bother investing heavily in Java like before? As I?ve maintained before, playing around with OSS is a dangerous game. OSS is an animal that has a mind of its own that may turn around and bite you, because at some point, you no longer serve its interests.
