Unfortunately, you couldn't be more wrong.
IMHO, MS wants Mono to succeed in the short run so that it can inflict a life threatening wound to java. Once java is crippled they can shut down Mono anytime they want buying yelling "IP violations", "We have patents we must protect!", etc.

Mono may be great technology, but I fear that using it will just be playing into MS's hands.
