Different strokes for different folks
..we've been told that Java (both the language and the platform) is all we need to develop our applications, from cell phones to supercomputers....

Don't believe everything you hear!
It's theoretically possible to run Java on both cellphones and a mainframe but
1. Why would a mainframe guy care what a cellphone manufacturer is using as a programming language
2. Is there a company that does both and wants a single language. If so, who are they.
3. From an engineering point of view, efficient fast code is more important than development tool on an expensive mainframe.

I don't do Java but any serious developer I've read about or spoken to says the WORA is a Croc O' Poo.

So, I would probably pick the best tool for the platform, regardless of other platforms in the food change.

My $0.02.
