It certainly is nice when the rail track gauge - not mandated by law - is the same in London as it is in Glasgow. And mains voltage - not mandated by law - is the same in my house as it is next door.

Theonly people not interested in standards being adopted universally are monopolies.

Imagine a world of universally agreed standards and protocols, with multiple OS platforms all able to inter-operate. Extrapltae that to ask yourself how many Americans could be in jobs (working for a wide range of OS vendors) that simply cannot exist thanks to Microsoft's monopoly.
