When standards don't apply

Funny: "I hope this guy realizes that standards are guidelines and not laws. People don't have to follow them, but yes it is nice when they do".

It certainly is nice when the rail track gauge - not mandated by law - is the same in London as it is in Glasgow. And mains voltage - not mandated by law - is the same in my house as it is next door.

Theonly people not interested in standards being adopted universally are monopolies.

Imagine a world of universally agreed standards and protocols, with multiple OS platforms all able to inter-operate.
