Interop = Web Services
Microsoft has been one of the leading proponents of Web services standards. They, along with IBM, BEA and many other companies, formed WS-I, the Web Services Interoperability Group. WS-I is driving a set of standards that will foster interop between platforms, apps etc etc. Web Services is what makes it reasonable for organizations to choose the platform they want (Linux, Unix, Windows etc.) based on their business needs and still have good interop. This, in my mind, is much better than saying "thou shalt only use one platform" and that's the end of it.
