- We don't know anything 'crashed'
-
My Linux servers get traffic bursts now and then. The Apache web server can saturate a 10 Mbps link without breaking a sweat, but if you're getting 1000Mbps worth of requests, that line is saturated, and 99% of site visitors are going to think your server is down.
The last time this happened, someone had tampered with the "search engine" at MSN.com so that if you searched "Fox News" it would lead to my customer's site instead of Fox'. We discovered an awful lot of people find Faux Nooz that way. The attack went on for six hours, with hundreds of people calling my customer's office to complain that we had "hacked Fox News." Eventually I logged in via Secure Shell and replaced the customer's front page with a short graphics-free explanation of the event, suggesting folks might not want to trust that "search engine" so much. The attack continued for about ten more minutes before MSN.com fixed their hacked web application.
The link was going 100% for over six hours. Linux and Apache took it in stride. But you wouldn't have known that from outside. My guess is the same thing happened to Ubuntu.com. Too many selfish people too rude and lazy to use a nearby mirror.
