LOL - Sometimes...
... I wonder if LD is an MS employee instead of just being a mindless sycophant.

In my case it was my underwhelming experience with XP that convinced me to switch. After the Nth re-install of XP (to fix my BSOD problem) I finally got a message from MS that said, in effect, "you have tried to register this software so many times we believe you are a pirate so call MS to get the registration key." - even though the IP address + h/w configuration had not changed (I was trying to re-install on the same PC). I rang the MS number and explained my situation. To their credit, I was given a key by a bored sounding support person with no further questions.

After that I vowed if it BSOD again (as it did) I would move to Linux (as I did). Primarily, although I had paid for XP some years earlier (full install) and I was trying to re-install it legitimately, I was still made to feel as if I was somehow doing something wrong by the over-zealous software.

Since moving to Linux (Ubuntu, although did look at dreamlinux) I haven't looked back. I should have made the move to Linux earlier and so I cannot criticise anyone who baulks at making the change; but I can strongly recommend making the move.

If you're like me and want to "test the water" then simply download the ISO, burn a CD and then boot into Ubuntu (or Knoppix or dreamlinux or...) FROM THE CD and try it out. When you shut down and take out the CD you will find your windows installation untouched.
