Obviously you don't know what you are talking about.
Nobody is "forced to upgrade" to read or write the new formats--unless you call turning in your Mac for a PC "upgrading". Mac doesn't support the new file format yet. Earlier versions of Office for the PC will be able to read AND WRITE the new formats. I'm not sure what's causing the slowdown with Macs but the Mobile 5 problem is probably caused by decompressing the ZIP format and memory issues.
