As a long time Linux user at the both the desktop and server level I have never really understood the disjointed nature of Linux desktop technology. Gnome has their way, KDE has their way and the problem is that neither way seems to be very stable.

I now use Startcom linux on one machine and Fedora core 5 on another machine. Both startcom prefers the Gnome interface, Fedora seems to be more pallitable under the KDE interface. Both machines have their purposes, but honestly, for daily, hassle free use, I use my XP machine. KDE takes lots of segmentation faults, Gnome is boring and has it's share of app "space outs".

Truthfully, the best thing about Linux is that the yum and apt standards have finally made package installation workable, in conjunction with rpm. The old adage, "you get what you pay for" is true, and in many cases this is so true. Yes there are many noteworthy exceptions, but all in all, I know my Wondoze stuff actually works.
