It's pretty simple actually
... Especially if you developed applications with it.

Unfortunately I must agree, MS's explanations of it are rather... "interesting" to say the least.

They go on about web services and the protocols used to connect to them and yes those are parts of .NET but it is a lot more. As another poster mentioned it's a much better way of developing applications on the windows platform (even though I really enjoyed Win32 and MFC).

It allows language inoperability just like COM, COM+, and DCOM did a couple of years ago but in a far less clunkier manner. Basically all applications written in any .NET language are compiled to the same IL (intermediate language) and then are executed.

There are even .NET frameworks which are being developed for the Linux platform (www.mono.org) so as long as the classes that you use in your application (staying away from the windows objects) have been implemented in mono your C# applications will run happily on a linux box.

Also there is another interesting tool called ikvm (www.ikvm.net) which allows you to recompile a .NET dll into Java and vice-versa. You can even call a .NET dll from within a Java application directly and once again, vice versa.
