Two Words: Market Share
Let's see, I'm a developer and I either a)want my product to become popular and then be able to charge for expansions later or b)want my product to sell lots and make me money. Am I going to a)write for an operating system with >90% market share or b)write for an operating system with <10% market share? Gee... that's a tough one, I think I'll go with 10%? WRONG. It's all about making money, software is most often written for the platform that will make the most money, for the past 10 years it's been Windows and as such, most of the software written over the last 10 years has been for Windows and for the foreseeable future it will continue to be for Windows. I'm not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing, I'm just stating a fact. And I fail to see what is all the hype about the hosted services - I mean yes, Windows Live Mail is pretty cool and useful, but personally I don't like the idea of depending on the server in the sky for my everyday computer needs.
