Loverock obviously has his biases, and clearly so do you (and everyone else, I'm sure). I have not tried the Google entry, so I can't say if it is clunky or not, but the comparison you bring up isn't really valid, I don't believe.

The difference I see when comparing early Windows and Excel to the current Google offering is that the MS products were still relatively early in the GUI evolution, so many things were a bit clunky then. Excel was one of the first, and probably the first widely used, GUI spreadsheet, originally on the Mac.

Google should be able to learn from the available interfaces and avoid making many of the same mistakes the earlier programs did. That is assuming, of course, that it is clunky, which you didn't seem to differ with.
