Yeah ...
When my PCLOS system boots into KDE, it's showing about 96MB of RAM in use. Then again, that includes Kopete, the FTP server, the Apache server, the mySQL server, and all those fun little applets like system monitors.

Sorry phumey, you speak like someone who has never booted a linux system. If you have, you sure didn't take the time to see what was running.

BTW - WTF is the point of upgrading to Vista if your machine is stuck in XP mode? (That would be the non-fancy Aero mode.) Hmm ... y'know, Aero is probably a fitting name for a Windows interface. Think about the chocolate bar - full of holes! :P

All jokes aside, if you can't run 'full blown Vista', what is the point of upgrading to it? Someone, please, answer me in all seriousness. Aren't the fancy nicities and transparencies the WHOLE marketing glitz on this (still vapourware) release? So far I haven't heard of ANYTHING in Vista that is an improvement over XP other than the whole Aero look and giggly windows. Something I've already had for a couple of years on linux. Something that didn't take 1GB of RAM to boot the OS, is proven stable, and is far more secure - even on old hardware. Heck, I had that working on an old AMD Duron 850!!

Vista will only be in front of me if I have no choice. Like at work where I have to deal with XP day in and day out. I honestly can not see ANY compelling reason to even consider it as a purchase ... and if the option was there, I bet most would still order XP pre-installed even after Vista comes out ... so their computer can use it's resources for the apps you're using rather than trying to keep the OS alive.
