OS X Tiger (Version 10.4.x) runs just fine...

I've installed the latest version of Mac OS X on older iMacs and it runs fine. You will need a model that has both Firewire and USB though. You'll also want to bump the memory up to at least 512 MB's (a gigabyte is better). I would also suggest updating the hard drive to a 7200 RPM model with an 8 MB buffer. I've done this with quite a few older systems and they run very adequately.

Unlike Microsoft, Apple optimizes their operating systems iterations to not only run faster on their new systems, but to run more efficiently on older iron as well. Apple deserves credit for following a very different paradigm than Microsoft. That?s why you see so many Mac users still using systems that are five or six years old running the latest and greatest software without a hitch. I like the Apple approach and philosophy much better than the buy a new Windows system every two or three years approach.
