Any time a new version of

Windows is released, they give minimum system requirements and never say if it is enough to use the computer or just to run Windows.

Their 'minimum' requirements have historically been barely enough to run Windows by itself, though. If history is any indication, you would likely need a dual-core or dual processor system to even be able to use it. One processor just for the OS and one for the application.

I don't get it - FreeBSD running KDE with all the crap turned on (transparent windows, animations, even a program drawing a real-time world time clock on the desktop) does all of this in ~50 MB of RAM with no page file usage. That's just running the OS, X11, and the window manager, equivalent to running Windows with no programs running. (Also no anti-virus or anti-spyware running, either!) Linux is a bit worse, using ~70 MB with no paging (OS, X11, and window manager only).
