Compatibility: common core is irrelevant
Java having a "vast common core" does not ensure compatibility.
Just a few well placed changes can break a lot of code. And the
cost of forking Java would be insignificant to the likes of MS,
who appear to have the most to gain.

Sun has two weapons to prevent forking: its trademark, and
Java's popularity. Were Java not so popular, with so much
existing code, it would be easier to have incompatible forks.
Now though, any knock-off will have to be extremely compatible
just to servive. I would expect Sun to continue to arbitrate
changes.
