Sun promises to open-source Java

You make a very good point....: It's likely that a big reason Sun is deciding to do this is that it now sees Mono as a competitive threat to Java, in that there's an open-source implementation of .Net that could gain a heavy following on *nix platforms, traditionally Sun's stronghold.
