MS tried it already...
Their JVM was incompatible and resulted in the court case. Although that was for breach of license terms, clearly another iteration of the same incompatibility would result in similar outcry. Customers simply won't tolerate incompatibility - they've finally become smarter about that. Multi-vendor & platform support, compatibility, and lack of lock-in are the reasons Java became so popular. Any vendor who tried to push an incompatible version would be hog-tied tossed in the river by customers.
