Open Source does NOT equal forking. Take Apache for instance.
It is widely used and anybody in the world could fork it, even proprietary versions. But it has NOT happened.

So, if Sun were to GPL Java, and also use branding to prohibit non-compatible versions, the risk of forking is about zero.

Having said that, a large vender like Microsoft that owns the desktop could to an intentional fork, not to help Java, but to cause problems. That is what they need to figure out. How to prevent Microsoft from using an open source version to create incompatibilities and other problems.
