Use of Java is more widespread than was use of Solaris, so the likelihood of the software being forked is correspondingly greater. This heightens .Net's advantage of having a single central control to assure compatibility, particularly with Microsoft products.

If IBM assures a limited number of commercial versions of Java, much as there are only two commercial versions of Linux, then the organizations set up to sell Java with IBM's imprimatur and that of other major software companies will be in effective control of Java as a commercial product.

It's easy to foresee an organization able to assure some degree of Java compatibility... with Java.

More lost revenue and an impatience from Wall Street that the layoffs which are the sole justification for this action happen quickly.
