It's a fact that no one runs out to buy a new PC because of an OS. I know people who bought XP only find it didn't run on thier old PC. They just shelved it and kept on going with Windows 98. So even they didn't do it.

People buy new PC when they need them, usually 3-5 years. Now rush for Vista will occur. You will see Vista sell as well as XP did. Also Microsoft already got paid for Vista from those with software assurance. So really where is this huge increase in money going to come from? Answer that one. This keeps current profits in place, that's it.

Remember Microsoft has 95% of the Desktop market. No room to grow there. So they have to rely on the hardware replacement cycle. On the server market well there is room to grow but same goes there, hardware cycles. Be it a SUN box being replace or just an old Win2K server being replaced. Micrsoft still has just a steady stream coming not much there.

Now the X-box 360, that's where there is potential for growth and a rush of profits.
