- More anti-Java Rhetoric?
-
Java is a threading demon. For example, there are daemon threads for the task of garbage collection and main user threads that listen for events from the mouse and keyboard. Hence applications like Star Office from Sun are going to get a huge boost in speed from the multicore machines even if the application or applet hasn't been coded with theading in mind.
Make an assumption (I happen to think is incorrect) that the reason Java isn't more prevalent on PCs has nothing to do with Microsoft's lobby and law firm's influence peddling and with monopoly power.
Instead consider the notion that Java isn't more prevalant because few PCs were capable of real threading. With this alternate theory to Java's retarded growth on PCs, one can see how Java became so popular on servers, where the performance issues go away owing to truely doing work in parallel, rather than simulating parallelism, which must be done on pre Xeon Intel PCs - for example.
The C and C++ office products and operating system products from Microsoft, unless they were built or re-engineered with threading in mind, being unable to take advantage of true multithreading, are not going to benchmark as well against the Java based products.
