What are these mysterious proprietary file formats?
PDF? Nope. It?s an open standard that anybody can, and many
do, write creator software for. There are even non Adobe apps
like Pitstop that make a very handsome living off the pdf format.

Virtually all of the rest of Adobe?s apps are used to save in open
standard formats like jpg, tiff, eps, etc. ? all easily editable in
other non Adobe applications. Virtually the only person who
might keep the original in a PSD or AI format would be the guy
who did the original creative work, and even then many just
keep the thing in a non lossy format like tiff or eps.

About the only format that might be considered closed would be
Indesign, but that can easily be exported to XML, SVG, EPS, etc.
