Please don't give the "dark ages" a bad name...
In the past 50 years, revisionist historians have enjoyed calling medieval times the "Dark Ages". In reality, they were not so dark. There was certainly a fair amount of warfare, but in comparison with any other era of history, that was not disproportionate. Consider that the Renaissance didn't spring from nowhere...medieval learning, monastic influences, the rise of nation-states...these were foundational to the flourishing that happened with the Renaissance. The reign of Charlemagne (he's not Charles the Great for nothing), the signing of the Magna Carta, gothic architecture...all symbols of what was not a dark age at all. Keep in mind that this was actually a period of regrouping and building, between the collapse of the Roman empire, and the firming up of national boundaries. The Roman empire "was the world" in its day, so the vacuum it left in the wake of its collapse was monstrous. A correct reading of history recognizes that with those circumstances, people actually did quite well at bringing some order and civilized life out of it. I wonder if future historians will look back so kindly at our modern period, with our ever-lowering bar for moral standards...or if they will recognize it as the truly dark age.
