Then you better get a couple of Phd's and invent something
This is basic research. These people aren't hired to crank out code or new features for Windows or Office. They're the equivalent to the Xerox Parc people from years back who are asked to think up interesting ideas that may or may not end up becoming a real product or making any money. Then, every once in a while, they come up with an idea that they or someone else thinks of a novel way to apply in the real world. When the guys at Xerox Parc came up with the idea of a graphical user interface or the computer mouse did they immediately become products? No, it took quite a while for the business people to think of way use those ideas in products.

Most good ideas come from people who aren't trying to do a particular thing. That's why they call it inspiration.
