If the purpose and philosophy behind open source is to restrict income, please explain why Red Hat, Novell, MySQL AB, Trolltech, and several others exist?

Red Hat profits from sales of RHEL and paid support. Red Hat benefits from open source via Fedora as a testing ground for future RHEL features.

Novell profits and benefits in a similar way Red Hat does.

MySQL and Trolltech use a dual-license approach by selling the commercial versions to companies while the next beta versions are opened to help shape the next finished product.

Linspire makes money by selling Linspire and through it's Click-N-Run service.

Companies can profit from open source, it's just the business and development models are different.
