IDEs vs. lifecycle management...
The "noone pays for IDEs" statement is ridiculous as a factor in this decision. Think about the implications. Borland is going to ditch its IDEs, the core of its onion, and instead focus on trying to make money off tools that automate and improve the lifecycle of projects/systems. Ask yourself which of these two classes of products would be harder to replicate and improve upon (and thereby compete against or replace). You have the answer to which they should keep and build around. There's no secret that there are many development tools that are open source and/or free (as in beer).

I, for one, will always believe that Borland is capable of making better, more advanced tools, that people would pay for...if they hadn't messed up the pricing structure a few years back and alienated developers. Once things got beyond $100 or $200, they lost the mindshare of the individual developers and had to buy their way into the enterprise minds...that's been their bid lately, and its not working so well.

What Borland should do, is ditch all the enterprise corporate integration lifecycle shmooze "emperor's clothes" crap products, get back to their core competency (if still possible...who knows what skilled devs have bailed?), and concentrate on providing *reasonably-priced*, top-line, best-in-market development tools. It's what they're good at, and what they are known for - and that goes a long way.
