Enterprise Software Will Live Forever - they just do not get replaced
The opportunities for the Web 2.0 kids are in figuring out how to tap those enterprise applications. Take Amazon.com for an example. Amazon is getting into the auto parts business.

Now everyone with a car needs parts and everyone with an auto shop needs a system that can help them determine which part is needed and who can provide it new or used at what price.

The web 2.0 kid can do something neat like gather computer aided design drawings and figure out how the various web services provided by junk yards and new part suppliers could be integrated with that and with UPS/ US Post office/ Fed X. He/She could put this on a webserver he/she operates. A handling fee based on orders might be involved or the web site might just serve as advertisement to those junk yards and new parts suppliers who have not yet built web services for their enterprise systems. The real money might be in working up those web services rather than from the web 2.0 work itself. Or it might be in building an expert system into the above whereby the home mechanic might diagnos his/her car's problem so they know if they really need to purchase a part in the first place. The charge could be for the advice in the form a a report.

There is a reason IBM is enforcing its patents against Amazon.com. IBM and Sears were pioneers in catalog sales by online mechanism. This web 2.0 stuff could be Napster all over again. These kids and venture angels need something like the above for patents and copyrights. Go Go
