Sun's business.
Sun wants to supply computing capacity to resellers:

"Ultimately, our preferred answer is that we become a wholesaler," McNealy said. "We don't want to be in the subscriber management business or customer care business. We're not structured to answer the calls. We don't have big billing engines to do microbilling. We don't have a consumer brand."

I wonder if he realizes that his plan requires him to have customers, the resellers. If he has a lot of small resellers, he'll have to do everything Sun does not want to be in the business of doing.

And the competition in that market, if it comes to exist, will be based on price. Sun needs a high margin; it's a comparatively small company.

If Sun makes this market, a larger company will drive them out of it on cost.

I would say I must be missing something because the error is so obvious, but this is the company that open-sourced Solaris. Lack of foresight is part of the culture.
