Network bandwidth resuscitated it.
Using linux for inexpensive, throwaway thin client nodes, and using a cluster of terminal servers (Microsoft), it'd be way too easy to do with a series of server clusters and bandwidth. (though one real mainframe is far more powerful than a cluster of kiddie-PCs with infantile-OSes on them...)
