Here's some reasons why
?As discussed, no large company was willing to gamble on the success of desktop Linux. ? Except of course, IBM, which promotes Linux clearly and repeatedly to the extent that they hav finally terminated support of OS/2 rather than building a 64 bit version. Or did they do this because as a service company they need Windows to supply a reason for support?

?...the reliable standard in a changing world.? This was of course IBM's OS/2 Warp which remained viable and useful for many years because it started life as a 32 bit multitasking multithreading OS as OS/2 Warp v 3.0 in 1993. and was upgraded to Warp 4 in Sept. 1996.

?Partly because Microsoft has concentrated on making Windows part of a connected set of software products.? ...which exclude the products of others wherever possible. People looking to simplify MUST standardize on Microsoft, or do without.

?I'm sure that you can think of other reasons Microsoft's hold on the desktop proved impregnable during the time when competitors had their best chance in a long time?

I sure can. Read the DoJ's files on the anti trust trial.
