Yes, but why should it?
Microsoft spends a fortune finding out what people want and giving it to them on the desktop.
A whole ecosystem of software is built on Windows as the world's operating system, and those who benefit from Windows' predominance are unlikely to want to change it.

In the Linux corner are a number of companies which benefit from Linux sales... (make that) installations at Unix-oriented corporations.

Which of these companies are betting their continued existences on the success of Linux as a Windows replacement on the desktop?

Desktop Linux lacks a champion with resources and an expectation of substantial profits.

Why the Linux desktop advocacy, then, if companies are not expecting to make money from success?

Keeping the fans (short for fanatics) happy and revved.
