Ok, I read a lot of tech pundits on both sides of the Java/Ruby/Python/PHP debate and I have to say, James isn't looking too coherent here. For example here is one of the jucier tidbits of incoherent semi-marketing bs bandied about as an "answer" to may of the questions that were posed.

"It's the virtual machine and it's the sort of ASCII syntax?all the other really interesting magic is in the virtual machine, the things that people never actually see."

The virtual machine, the "sort of ASCII syntax" and the other really interesting magic, the ... virtual machine. Wait that's three items, but one was listed on both sides of the fence. Now that isn't the worst part, Java uses UTF16 for it's character encoding so it's i18n friendly. So why go out of your way to say that the source is encoded as ASCII (which is an older standard than ANSI which most people would use in place of the classification ISO-8859-1, i.e. Latin-1). Beyond that foible, the sentence just doesn't make much sense, "it's the sort of ASCII syntax", what are you trying to say? If you mean, there are two parts to Java, the Java language, meaning the syntax and then there's the virtual machine and the bytecode language which is the execution environment, well then why not just say that. The mumbling, bumbling "sort of ASCII syntax" makes you sound like some random marketing drone called in to do damage control in the wake of Ruby on Rails' meteoric rise in popularity.
