Moving on from Java
Gosling is correct when he says the majority of scripting languages look very like Java.

I think the productivity gains for scripting languages are overrated and essentially they are doing the same stuff in a slightly different way to Java.

If you want something genuinely different (and more productive) then you need to start looking at declarative, logic based approaches. This is really moving to a higher level of abstraction whereas object-orientation is just a way of making a set of third generation language practices easier to program.
