Java made an impact
I think in particular the JVM. There is nothing "wrong" with Java.

On the otherhand, there are other programming languages which enjoy certain features which could prove a strategic advantage. Instead of "scripting languages" one might talk of "dynamic languages".

Python is a particularly good example of how a language can simply the programming concepts required to get from A to B (though it seems to respond especially well to sophisticated object-oriented use). Python is not a web-specific language, despite how it is represented in the article, and is extremely well suited for large, complex applications (think: reducing your lines of code by a magnitude).

The future might be Python, or not, but I think computer languages have progressed since the inception of Java (partly on its shoulders). The investment the IT world has made in Java, however, provides a pretty strong disincentive to change.

OTOH, for all the reasons that LISP may be the great language that never really caught on, a "do-everything, do it cleanly" programmer-friendly language like Python could become the rage, regardless of the inertia in the IT world.

But thanks to Mr. Gosling - Java has been a huge contribution to us all!
