Mr. Gosling continually refers to the value of the tools availabale to make Java easier. Yes, tools are a way to distinguish from open source; companies hoping to be paid for services are not likely to make a priority of tools obviating services.

Note this exchange:

What do you mean?

G: Well, if you look at many of them, they kind of look like Java programs.

Being "weird" means not reducing Java use. I can see why he'd say that.


To me, the underlying view is that open source is a threat to be countered gently.
